Stone the Wallabies!
From karohemd 's journal: Stoned wallabies make crop circles. In other news, young Blake is doing well at 6 weeks today. Slept through the night, smiles back, kind of grabs at stuff. Putting him on a bit of a "tough love" routine following ezzo's BabyWise book. We'll see how that goes. Comments and suggestions welcome. Here's some funny baby products, for your amusement. UK ID cards The first UK ID cards have already been issued - but no UK police officers or border guards have any way of reading the data stored on them. Currently no police stations, border entry points or job centres have readers for the card's biometric chip, the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) revealed in response to an FoI (Freedom of Information) request by silicon.com about the £4.7bn identity cards scheme.

I guess we'll just have to wait for the government to lose all the data, and somebody to post it on the net ... Current Mood: cynically amused | | Sunday, January 18th, 2009 | | 5:45 pm |
Meme
I don't usually do these meme things, but I haven't posted for ages, and will do anything to dodge out of more DIY. (I've spent several hours putting up shelves). Thanks to spencerpine for the meme.
1 Make a list of things you can see without getting up:I'm in the junk room, doubling as my office. My desk, PC stuff, disks, mail to sort. Shelves piled with laundry and suitcases. Boxes of assorted bits & bobs (mostly gadgets & electronics). Toolkit & large box of DIY stuff. Bunk bed, totally filled with boxes of clothes and baby stuff. Yamaha P80 digital piano. 2 How do you style your hair?I just had a haircut this week, short back & sides. Day or two of beard. 3 What are you wearing now?"Route 66" black tourist t-shirt from my world tour, tracksuit pants, ugg boots. 4 Do you have some sort of secret superpower?Changing traffic lights. Occasionally power over weak minds. 5 What's the last thing you read/are currently reading?Polity Agent, by Neal Asher. Wants so badly to be Iain M Banks. Trashy space opera, didn't really hold my interest. Disgrace, by J.M.Coetzee. Well written, beautiful prose style, but not much of a plot. 6 Do you nap a lot?No. Probably should. I veg out instead browsing the net, or reading a book. 7 Who was the last person you hugged? My lovely wife, Lynn. 8 What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?LEGO Indiana Jones. Dr Who. Ptolus. Python / Django / Pyjamas. Aepic (again!). 10 What was the last thing you ate today?A carrot. Some hours before, a nice Sunday brunch with pancakes. 11 What was the last thing you said aloud?"That's enough DIY, just a short break before I do some more." (finishing this post after putting up another shelf) 12 What websites do you always visit when you go online?Slashdot, facebook, LJ. Often Claphammassive, lifehack.org, bookmooch.com, metacritic.com. Check blogs & podcasts, though not always. 13 Last thing you bought:Lots of fruit & veg from Sainsburys, and a cooked chook. 14 What are you listening to right now?The sound of silence. And the rest of "Best of Simon & Garfunkle." 15 What's the last song that got stuck in your head?"I kissed a girl", by Kate Perry. "Angel in the night", by Basshunter. 16 If you could have any superpower, what would it be?Mastery of time & space! 17 What is your favorite weather, and why?Hot, blue-skied summer weather, with not a cloud in the sky. But I also like the clear-skied, crisp, sunny winter we've had. I'm happy with any weather as long as it's not humid. 18 How are you?Very well, thanks. Enjoying married life, and looking forward to baby boy in May. My knee is on the mend, so I hope to play volleyball again soon too. 19 What's something you'd like someone to say to you right now?"Let me help you with that DIY" 20 Say something to the person who tagged you.Hope to see you at gaming this week! Back in London
Finally over the jetlag, and mostly settled back in. Lots of unpacking things from boxes, arranging furniture. Did the big shop, filled the cupboards and fridge. Chinese supermarket in Greenwich a big winner. Starting to look for a job. Any leads? Give me a shout if you're in London, we can catch up. Goodbye Beijing!
We've just been to Lynn's hometown in Shandong province, to stay with her parents, and leave our pet chihuahua "NiuNiu" with them. Then across the bay to Dalian city, catching up with old friends, far too many seafood banquets for me! A few photos from the trip at my flickr. Now back in Beijing, packing up and seeing friends, before we move to London at the end of the week. Hope to catch up with some of you then! Paul Keating as fantastic as ever
A great article from Paul Keating, Australia's best-ever Prime Minister, via ladnews, angriest: "Nations get a chance to change course every now and then. When things become errant, a wise country adjusts its direction. It understands that it is being granted an appointment with history. On this coming Saturday, this country should take that opportunity by driving a stake through the dark heart of Howard's reactionary government." Boardgames in Beijing
I've found a boardgames club here in Beijing, all chinese people, so I'm off to give it a go. I'm hoping that playing euro games will transcend language, and I can make some new friends! Current Mood: hopefulCurrent Music: cheesy chinese pop | | Tuesday, November 13th, 2007 | | 9:28 pm |

Holidays
Tomorrow is Moon Festival, closely followed by National Day next week, so I have some time off from school. I'm catching a train up to Weihai, with plans to also visit Dalian and nearby, as well as celebrate the festivals with chinese friends. One Night in Beijing
I went out last night to catch up with my cousin Simon, also studying in Beijing. We had dinner at a nice southern Chinese place in Guomao tower, which was also very reasonably priced (maybe £12/$30 total for a 3-person feast). Guomao is the heart of the CBD, and has all the international fashion stores (Gucci, Armani, Aquascutum, Burburry, etc etc). The feast was beef black bean, tempura fish & seafood, roast chicken, variety of green vegetables, combination noodles with pork, not so different from a chinese meal in London or Perth, though a bit less sweet or salty.
